Fire Extinguisher Questions

What type, rating and number of extinguishers does my business need?

Selection depends on the expected fire hazards, extinguisher ratings, floor layout and travel distances. An office, commercial kitchen and industrial work area may need different protection.

Have the premises assessed against the applicable requirements. A single extinguisher type or a simple floor-area formula is not suitable for every business.

What is the difference between a monthly extinguisher check and annual maintenance?

A visual check looks for issues such as missing equipment, blocked access or visible damage. Annual maintenance is a separate service; it does not replace routine checks.

OSHA generally requires monthly visual inspections and annual maintenance for workplace extinguishers covered by its standard. Additional internal maintenance and testing depend on the extinguisher type.

Can my employees check extinguishers, or do we need a licensed service company?

Trained, designated staff can perform routine visual checks as part of a workplace inspection program. Those checks are different from servicing, recharging or pressure testing.

Confirm the qualifications and Texas licensing required for the specific work before assigning it. A monthly checklist does not qualify an employee to perform every extinguisher service.

Should I service, recharge or replace an extinguisher?

The decision depends on whether the unit is rechargeable, its condition and the maintenance or testing due. Non-rechargeable extinguishers cannot simply be refilled.

Ask a qualified provider to explain the required work and compare the complete service and replacement options. Neither a green gauge nor a low purchase price settles the question by itself.

What protection is needed while an extinguisher is away for service?

Arrange equivalent alternate protection when a required workplace extinguisher is removed for maintenance or recharging. Confirm the replacement coverage and duration before the unit is taken away.

Ask the service provider how protection will be maintained; do not assume the usual location can remain unprotected.

Do employees need fire extinguisher education or training?

Where OSHA-covered employers provide extinguishers for employee use, education is required at initial employment and at least annually. Employees designated to use firefighting equipment have additional training requirements.

The program should match the workplace emergency plan, including who evacuates and who is authorized to use equipment.
